Driving up to Alaska is supposed to be one of the last great road trips. We were happy to arrive at the official end in Delta having taken a few weeks to barefoot north. The unofficial records are measured in hours and less than 10 for the m/c nuts. Well we have seen some people who have had much greater trips. As well as sundry cyclists, bikers and one horseman;
we have met the Morrisons with their Aston Martin DB6 mkII which they had just driven from Panama to Anchorage in a classic car rally. MORE DETAILS We also keep meeting up with a South African couple who have driven their Landrover Overlander camper round Africa, across Asia, round China, round Australia and from the southern tip of South America up to Alaska and are just keeping going North.
We lost their pic so this is a sister Overlander.
The next pic shows Walmarts car park, full of cars with electrical plugs dangling out og there front grilles. So what you say. Well in minus 40
you need to plug in to keep your car warm. So Walamrt provide sockets and cars come with plugs! Heaters in the oil sump, radiator and gearbox keep things warm enough to start. Many cars come with a remote start option and people will start from the checkout and have the heater on defrost to clear screens. Life is tough at minus 40.
We visited a wildlife centre and saw first hand the proof of the success of the recovery program for sandhill cranes.
This wildlife success story is possible because a recovering crane population has found available wetlands to nest in and agricultural lands that are suitable for foraging. But the farmers are getting p.o. with the feeding cranes scarfing up their seed grain.
